William Wilcox ’91 came to Castleton by way of Wyoming to advance himself in the field of geology. Having competed at a very high level of ski racing prior to coming to Castleton, he decided that, along with soccer, he would compete for the NCAA Division I Spartans. On the soccer field, Wilcox was called upon to play defensive back and stopper, with the responsibility of holding the opposition’s best offensive player in check. Wilcox performed very well until his junior season, when his heavy course load of lab sciences forced him to commit to his studies. On the ski slopes, Wilcox qualified for the national championships in both the slalom and giant slalom. Overall, he finished 24th and 27th in those events , respectively. It was bittersweet as he had beaten many of his competitors before this season, but again, his dedication in the classroom had forced him to miss necessary training time. Wilcox graduated magna cum laude and was the recipient of the RockyMezzetta Memorial Award, and the men’s Coaches’ Award along with team MVP honors for skiing. Since graduation Wilcox has moved on to own three separate companies in the field of environmental consulting and expedition drilling. He is the proud father of three children: Curtis, Carly, and Lucas and makes his home in Moretown, Vermont.
