John Cottone ’74 epitomizes the best in athletics on the playing field and off. As a student, he was a fine midfielder on the powerful lacrosse team, scoring more than 100 career points and being named to the New England All Stars in 1974, and he was one of the first student athletic trainers. Overcoming the loss of his right arm, he earned a master’s degree in athletic training and won the respect of colleagues and athletes for his skill in the profession. He returned to Castleton as assistant athletic trainer and in 1978 became a member of the physical education faculty and director of the athletic training program. In the view of many, Cottone deserves credit for establishing the excellent reputation held by that program. Since 1985, he has been the head athletic trainer and program director for athletic training education at SUNY College at Cortland.
