Bill Olney ’73 has dedicated his life to teaching and coaching softball. In 1957 Olney began pitching fast pitch softball, and over his 40-year career pitched for several state champions in both Vermont and New Hampshire. In 1988, Olney pitched for the National Runner-Up and was a first-team All-American honoree in 1994. In 1975, Olney began teaching at Mill River Union High School, where he also coached the baseball team for 11 years, earning Marble Valley League Coach of the Year in 1986. It was also in 1975 that Olney began teaching fast-pitch softball. Over his 33 years as a softball pitching instructor, Olney has taught young women from over 50 high schools in Vermont, New Hampshire, New Yorkand Connecticut. Many of his students have pitched for state championship teams and have gone on to highly successful careers in collegiate softball, several at the NCAA Division I level. He has also worked with the pitching staffs from 10 colleges, and has been the pitching coach at Dartmouth College since 1995.
