Laurie Chatey ’77 has been described as “the finest natural athlete we have ever had.” In 1976-77, she was MVP in soccer, basketball and softball, was a fine volleyball player, and was awarded the Coaches’ Trophy for excellence in more than one sport. Against the powers in the East, she was the leading scorer in soccer for four years.  She was a forward and had the leading field goal percentage on the ’77 basketball team, which achieved a 14-2 record. In softball, she was a hard-hitting pitcher and shortstop. Chatey chose Castleton because of CSC’s many options in women’s sports, and she and her teammates elevated the level of play and interest in women’s athletics. Chatey coached Castleton softball for three seasons and in 1982 led the team to the regional title and its first trip to the NAIA national championships.
