Shelley Lutz ’75, the winner of an incredible 14 letters in four sports, is considered by many to be the first great Castleton woman athlete. She was one of the new generation of women who took advantage of a growing emphasis on equality in sports to compete extremely well. She was a top-ranked Division II skier who in her senior year, was invited to the Division I championships. Never having played lacrosse before college, she quickly became part of the Castleton attack on the strong teams of those years. She was an accomplished offensive player in field hockey and a great volleyball player. She and her teammates helped build the foundation for modern women’s athletics at Castleton.
