Florence Black, faculty member beginning in 1922 and later dean, promoted athletics and physical fitness for young women at a time of limited opportunity. She directed the Spring Field Day and in 1926 instituted the winter carnival, which included snow sports such as snowshoeing, skiing, and jack-jumping. Under her guidance, the Athletic Association developed a program of sports including baseball, tennis, basketball, volleyball, hiking, skating, and skiing. As dean and dean emeritus, she was known as a strong supporter of Castleton athletics. Her lasting impact on generations of Castleton students and faculty is enormous.
