In his sixteen years at Castleton, Charles Ash – teacher, coach, and advocate for intelligent exercise – exemplified the involvement of a faculty member in the campus and the greater community. He founded Castleton’s Human Performance Laboratory and the major in Exercise Science. He coached basketball, cross country running, and tennis, a sport in which he was a U.S. Professional Tennis Association Teaching Professional. His community service included work with cardiac patients, the Green Mountain Senior Games, and the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness. At the national team level, he was a consultant to the U.S. Cross-Country Ski Team and a member of the U.S. Biathlon Team Sports Medicine Council. Since 1986, he has been Associate Professor of Physical Education and Coordinator of the Exercise Science Unit at SUNY College at Cortland.
