Carolyn Brown (Griggs) ’09 helped put a recently-revived Castleton field hockey program on the map when she arrived on campus in 2005. She made an immediate impact as a freshman, scoring 13 goals and adding two assists for a team-leading 28 points. After a 27-point sophomore season that consisted of 13 goals and one assist, the Lincoln, Vt., native tallied 35 points by way of 15 goals and five assists as a junior. Her scoring prowess ranked her among the nation’s leading scorers during her junior season, a position she would maintain as a senior when she poured in 22 goals and added 11 assists for 55 points. She concluded her career as Castleton’s all-time leading scorer, and currently ranks third on the all-time points list for the Spartans at the time of her induction with 145 points and 63 goals. Her 55-point senior season marks the fourth-most points in a single season by any Castleton field hockey player in the modern era, and helped lift Castleton to its first North Atlantic Conference Championship in 2008. After earning NAC Championship Tournament MVP honors in 2008, Brown became the first player in school history to earn a spot on the NFHCA Division III Senior All-Star Team. She was named to an All-Conference Team in each of her four seasons, and was named NAC Player of the Week on five occasions over her final two seasons with the team. She also received the Sharon Brown Memorial Award from the institution in 2007 and the Mary Ellen Evans Award in 2009. Following graduation, Brown worked in public schools for four years and was an assistant coach at her high school alma mater, Mount Abraham, where the school won a state championship during her time with the program. She currently works as a home-to-school liaison for local schools and resides in Lincoln, Vt., with her husband, Matt, and their three children, Hailey, Nora and Lucas.
