Jim Gilbert served Castleton in many capacities: psychology professor, dean of admissions and records, initiator of computerization, and coach and coordinator of the college’s ski racing program during the 1960s and early 1970s. An avid skier, camper, fisherman, and hunter, Gilbert represented the ideal that a love of outdoor activity was part of a well-rounded life. He was an alpine ski racing official for the United States Eastern Amateur Ski Association and a long-time member of the race committee of the Pico Ski Club. He was instrumental in establishing the close relationship between Castleton and Pico Ski Resort, which continues to benefit both recreational skiers and varsity ski racers alike. He is remembered by colleagues and former students for his sense of humor, his energy, and his dedication to Castleton.
