Fran Grembowicz ’78 helped pave the way for women’s athletics during the late 1970s at Castleton. Competing for four seasons in field hockey and two each in softball and lacrosse, she displayed a wide array of athletic talents. As a senior Grembowicz shined, earning Most Valuable Player honors in both field hockey and lacrosse. After her senior year, she also earned a spot on the United States Field Hockey Association Northeast Squad. After earning her bachelor’s degree in physical education,Grembowicz has gone on to earn master’s degrees from the University of Vermont and Smith College. She has enjoyed a very successful career as a coach, now entering her 13th season at Saint Lawrence University as head coach of the field hockey team, amassing a 133-73 career record with the Saints. Her teams have earned a pair of ECAC Mid-Atlantic titles and have appeared in the Liberty League final three times. Grembowicz has also earned Liberty League Coach of the Year honors twice, most recently sharing the honor in 2008. In addition to her duties as field hockey coach, Grembowicz is also an assistant athletic director and head coach of the Saint Softball team, helping start the team from the ground up in 2000.
