The basketball teams to which Scott Sterling ’84 contributed so much in the early 1980s established Castleton’s reputation as a powerhouse among small colleges. From the Bronx, Scott was the first major Spartan athlete to come out of a big city and was the first Spartan basketball player to be District 5 Player-of-the-Week and named to the ECAC honor roll. He was All-District in the 1981-82 season, and the next season he led the Spartans in scoring and was second in rebounds, again being named All-District. He continues to hold Castleton records for career and season field goal percentage (62.2 career and 68.0 for 1981-82). Charismatic as an athlete, he worked with local youngsters on weekends, teaching basketball skills. He brought rap music to Castleton and was on the verge of a major record contract at the time of his death.
