After a slow start to the season, the 1963 soccer team, coached by Richard Terry, finished the year with a 10-4-1 record, including a final nine game win streak. The Spartans advanced to the NAIA national tournament by defeating Barrington College, 2-1, with Bucky Knisley scoring both goals in the second period. At the NAIA National Championships, held in Frostburg, Maryland, Castleton beat defending champions East Stroudsburg 2-1 in a pelting sleet storm. But the scheduled playoff against Earlham College had to be canceled because of deep snow, and both colleges were named NAIA co-champions. CSC goalie Lee Orvis was named MVP of the tournament. Right halfback Pete Messina was also named to the All-Tournament team. Fullback Art Delorenzo was the team’s white letter winner, the most valuable player for the season.
