Patricia Candon ’76 spent her time at Castleton immersing herself in the world of physical education and Spartan athletics. Candon was an active participant in the Physical Education Club, while lettering in field hockey and softball during her four years. She was also the manager of the gymnastics team for all four years, and spent two seasons playing volleyball for both the varsity and club teams at Castleton. Upon graduation, Candon immediately set to work advancing women’s athletics in the state and teaching physical education. She has been a high school field hockey official since 1975, and in 1986 received her sectional-level rating to begin working college-level games. Her rating as a top official in the state has led to countless invitations to work Vermont state final games. Since taking over the Otter Valley Union High School varsity softball team in 1986, Candon has compiled a227-158 overall record, leading her teams to four league titles and a pair of state championships. She has also earned league coach of the year honors five times and was a founding member of the Vermont Softball Coaches Association. Candon continues to be an active member in several governing bodies in field hockey, softball and physical education.
