A native of nearby North Clarendon, Vermont, Courtney Chadburn ’12 came to Castleton in 2008 and made an immediate impact on an already-successful program. She racked up 52 points in her rookie campaign, scoring 21 goals and adding 10 assists to rank top 20 in the nation in goals and points per game. Her success garnered her North Atlantic Conference Rookie and Player of the Year honors. She followed her debut performance with an equally-impressive sophomore season, again ranking inside the nation’s top 20 in goals and points per game. Chadburn netted 24 goals and added six assists, guiding Castleton to a NAC championship game appearance and repeating as NAC Player of the Year. As a junior in 2010, Chadburn racked up 21 more goals and eight assists for 50 points, placing inside the NCAA’s top 20 in goals and points per game while earning NAC Player of the Year honors for the third straight season. Chadburn’s leadership helped Castleton land its first NAC title since 2005, with the Spartans defeating four-time defending champion Husson for the crown. As impressive as her first three seasons were in green and white, she saved her best for last, amassing 57 total points as a senior on 20 goals and 17 assists while helping Castleton to a program-record 17 victories. Chadburn scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Husson in the NAC Championship game, lifting the Spartans to back-to-back titles. She scored eight game-winning goals in 2011, second-most in the nation, and her 17 assists were second-most among all players in the country as well. She ranked inside the top five nationally in both total points and assists per game, and landed NAC Player of the Year honors for the fourth consecutive time. She was named the ECAC New England Offensive Player of the Year and NAC Woman of the Year following her senior season, and was also recognized nationally by College Sports Information Directors of America as the 2011 NCAA Division III Academic All-American of the Year. At the time of her graduation, Chadburn was one of less than 50 NCAA Division III women’s soccer players all-time to amass more than 40 goals and 40 assists in a career, finishing her time at Castleton with 86 goals and 41 assists for 213 total points—all of which are program records. In total, she landed ECAC All-Region honors three times and was named the team’s most valuable player in each of her four seasons while landing Castleton’s Sharon Brown Memorial Award twice and Female Coaches Award once. Following her stellar playing career, Chadburn stayed on as a graduate assistant coach for the Spartans, helping lead Castleton to another NAC title on the sideline while coaching one NAC Player of the Year and two NAC Rookies of the Year. Chadburn resides in St. Albans, Vermont, and works as a middle school physical education teacher and coach.
