Edith Ewald, who came to Castleton in 1937, was the first faculty member who had been specifically trained in physical education. In that first year she taught classes and organized a girls’ basketball team that played a short schedule. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s she was advisor for the Athletic Association, promoting a wide range of intramural athletic and recreational activities for women. Miss Ewald was the female director of the Athletic Association as modern varsity sports for women began at Castleton in 1958-59. Miss Ewald helped write physical education curriculum guides for the State of Vermont and attended international conferences on health education. Upon retiring from Castleton, she served in the Peace Corps.
