Art DeLorenzo ’64 was an integral part of one of the most successful four-year runs in Castleton soccer history. The teams were a combined 41-10-1 in four seasons, including a New England State College Championship and perfect 11-0 mark in 1961, the only undefeated season in Castleton soccer history. In 1962 the team earned a NAIA Area Four Championship, and finished third in the National Championships. The 1963 team went on to be named NAIA National Co-Champions, the only team in Castleton history to earn a share of a national title. DeLorenzo is credited with helping turn the 1963 season around, moving from offense to starting sweeper and earning team Most Valuable Player honors for his efforts. While at Castleton he also played junior varsity and varsity basketball and was sports editor of The Spartan. After graduation, DeLorenzo coached the Castleton junior varsity soccer team to an undefeated season in 1964, before earning a master’s degree from Ithaca College in 1968. DeLorenzo went on to earn a second master’s degree in financial services; he retired as a Group Vice President from Ameriprise Financial Services in 2004. An avid mountaineer,DeLorenzo counts California’s Mount Whitney and Hawaii’s Mona Kea as two of the many mountains he has climbed in the United States. His climbing career came to an end in 2008 after summiting Mera Peak and Island Peak in Nepal, India, two mountains near Mount Everest. DeLorenzo and his wife of 35 years, Debra, have four grown children and several grandchildren.
