Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team scored in the opening minute of play, but Plattsburgh State controlled the action from there as the Spartans fell 23-7 to the Cardinals at Dave Wolk Stadium Tuesday night.
Castleton (1-4) was outshot by Plattsburgh State (4-0) 48-18, while the Cardinals also had advantages in ground balls (27-16) and draw controls (18-14). The Spartans were just 8-of-21 on clears and had 26 turnovers, while Plattsburgh State was 12-of-16 clearing the ball with only 15 turnovers.
Erin Shuttle and Morgan Derosia had three goals apiece for the Spartans, with Madeleine Brasser adding Castleton's other tally. Shuttle also had five draw controls with Derosia adding three. The goal for Brasser was the first of her collegiate career. Aubra Linn had an assist for Castleton to along with four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Raven Payne amassed 15 saves in the loss while adding four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Three players finished the night with five points each for Plattsburgh, as Allie Vangas had five goals while Emily Caoili and Deja Richardson amassed three scores and two assists each. Frankie Porcaro scored four times and led all players with seven draw controls. Lindsay Guzzetta had five ground balls for the Cardinals, while Kerri Corcoran had six draw controls. Sarah Braja earned the win, playing 28-plus minutes and making a pair of saves for Plattsburgh. Alexa Cassidy relieved Braja late in the first half, making two saves in her 31-plus minutes of action.
Derosia got Castleton on the board first, carrying the ball to the middle of the box and beating Braja for a 1-0 Spartan lead just 43 seconds into the game. Plattsburgh State responded just 27 seconds later, as Vangas started a string of seven straight Cardinal goals. Derosia scored again for Castleton with 22:07 to play in the half to stop the Plattsburgh run, but the Cardinals rattled off four more in a row to take an 11-2 lead with 12:57 remaining before the break. Shuttle got on the board with her first of the day to make it 11-3, but yet another run by the Cardinals extended the gap to 15-3 late in the half. Shuttle's second score of the day with 2:24 left in the half made it a 15-4 game at the break.
The second half began with a pair of Cardinal goals from Corcoran and Porcaro, before Brasser scored her first career goal on a free-position shot to make it 17-5. Derosia completed her hat trick with 14:40 left in the game to make it 18-6, before Shuttle made the score 20-7 with her third of the game five minutes later. Plattsburgh tacked on the final three scores of the contest to win 23-7.
Castleton is back in action Thursday for game four of a five-game homestand. The Spartans host Mt. St. Mary at 4 p.m.
