Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. -- In a lengthy three-hour contest, the Castleton University women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to the visiting Sage Colleges in a non-conference match earlier this afternoon. With the loss today, the Spartans fall to 2-4 (0-2 LEC) while the Gators improve to 5-1 (0-0 Empire 8).
The Spartans got off to a slow start as the first doubles flight of Megan Nadler and Regina Marchese were defeated 8-1. The second flight of Emily Miller and Megan Hunt were able to hang around before falling to Rebecca Jackson and Taylor Gillespie 8-6.
Doubles concluded with the third flight of Grace Sharkey and Alexis Curley, ahead 7-2 before dropping nine straight games in a 9-7 defeat to Alison Trudo and Molly Cochrane.
Trailing 3-0 after doubles, the Spartans took home two of the six singles matches. Nadler took care of business, grabbing the win at first singles with a score of 6-2, 6-4. With the win today, the senior from Rutland, Vermont now has 29 career singles wins.
At sixth singles, Curley easily took the first set 6-3 from Cochrane before dropping the second set 7-5. With the match already decided, the pair squared off in a third set tiebreak. Curley took the upper hand and won the tiebreak 10-8 to earn her 13th career singles win.
Rounding out the scoring for the Spartans was Miller, who was defeated at second singles, dropping a 6-1, 6-0 decision. At third singles, Hunt was broken once in the first set and ultimately lost 6-4, 6-0. Marchese was broken late in the first set and fell 7-5, 6-2 at fourth singles. Sharkey grabbed four games in a 6-1, 6-3 loss at fifth singles.
Women's tennis will return to action on Saturday, September 21 as it takes on UMass-Dartmouth in a Little East Conference matchup at the Castleton Tennis Courts.
