CASTLETON, Vt. -- The Vermont State University Castleton women's tennis team swept the Russell Sage College Gators in their home opener on Friday afternoon, 7-0.
The Spartans set the tone in doubles play, winning all three matches.
Olivia Rutkowski and
Grace Pluff were the first doubles team to finish, earning a convincing 6-0 victory.
Maggie McKearin and
Halle Hipple followed with a 6-3 win, while
Brooke Hecker and
Andrea Rodriguez completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 decision.
In singles action, Castleton continued its strong performance, winning all six matches. Hipple was the first Spartan to finish, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory, followed by Pluff with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Rodriguez finished with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
McKearin added a 6-2, 6-2 win before Rutkowski battled through a competitive match, rallying for a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 victory in the deciding super tiebreaker. Hecker capped off the singles sweep with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 victory.
Johnson also competed in an exhibition match, earning a 6-1 win.
The Spartans are on the road for their next match at Plattsburgh State on Sept. 5 with a 1 p.m. start.
