Women's Lacrosse Comeback Falls Short at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – Castleton University attempted to rally from a six-goal deficit, pulling to within two goals midway through the second half, but Southern Maine pulled away for a 15-10 victory Friday evening in a non-conference collegiate women's lacrosse contest at Hannaford Field.

Castleton's Tiffany Danyow started the scoring just 50 seconds into the match, but Southern Maine quickly responded with four unanswered goals over the next five minutes, three of them by Lauren Lessard. The Spartans put together their first rally of the game, as Emily Cross and Grace Johnson scored just 15 seconds apart to close the Castleton deficit to 4-3.

Southern Maine (3-1) would score the next five goals over a seven-minute span, led by Sam Campobasso with two goals and two assists and Allison Irish with two goals and one assist. Danyow would score the final two goals of the first half, the second one off an assist by Ashley Pelkey, to bring the Spartans within four at halftime, 9-5.

Irish and Campobasso scored the first two goals of the second half to help the Huskies reestablish its six-goal advantage at 11-5. Led by two goals from Cross as well as a goal and an assist from Pelkey, the Spartans scored five of the next six goals to close the deficit to 12-10 with 13:59 remaining in regulation.

After almost eight minutes of scoreless action, Southern Maine iced the game with three consecutive goals, two of them from Lessard. The Huskies finished with more total shots than the Spartans, 34-22, as well as more draw controls, 16-11.

Danyow led the Spartans with a career-high four goals, while Cross notched her first career hat trick and Pelkey contributed one goal and two assists. Castleton goalie Samantha Hebb finished with nine saves as she attempted to keep the Spartans within striking distance.

Campobasso led the Huskies with four goals and four assists, Lessard tallied five goals in the match, and Irish contributed three goals and one assist. Heather Everett paced the Southern Maine defense with seven ground balls and six caused turnovers, and netminder Hala Van Nostrand was credited with five saves in the winning effort.

Castleton (0-4) is scheduled to open its conference schedule Saturday, March 25, against Maine Maritime starting at 3:30 p.m. in Castine, Maine.
