Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton men's soccer team picked up a convincing, North Atlantic Conference victory on Tuesday evening at Spartan Stadium, leading wire-to-wire in a 3-0 shutout of Lyndon.
The Spartans move to 2-1in NAC action with the win, and 2-5-2 overall on the season. Lyndon falls to 2-1 in conference play, and 5-2 overall this season.
Fidele Rutayisire had a career-best game for the Spartans, recording one goal and one assist in the victory. Nihad Basic and Jack Kingdon each netted their second goals of the season in the victory, with Basic striking first and for the game-winning goal in just the 6th minute of the game. Dan Palker stopped the only shot he faced en route to a shutout in goal.
Matt LaClair made seven saves in the loss for Lyndon, while Nik Fahey had the Hornets' only shot on goal.
The Spartans got things going early, when Basic took a centering pass from Rutayisire and finished into the right side of the net to give his squad the early 1-0 lead. Castleton had another golden chance in the 11th minute, when Paul Phillips sprung Kingdon on a breakaway. Kingdon got in deep on the goalie, but his attempt to flick it over the keeper was stoned away by LaClair.
The Spartans doubled their lead in the 25th minute, when Rutayisire made a run up the center of the defense and finished a long pass from Josh Mathews to make it a 2-0 game going into the halftime break.
In the 54th minute, Kingdon drew a foul in the box when he was tackled from behind, giving himself a penalty kick chance. The rookie buried it for his second goal of the season, giving Castleton a 3-0 lead it would hold through the final whistle.
Castleton held a 22-6 total shot edge, while outshooting Lyndon 10-1 on goal. The Spartans took four corners to the Hornets' two, while Castleton committed nine fouls to Lyndon's eight. The Hornets were tagged with two yellow cards, while Castleton received a yellow of its own.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they travel to Green Mountain at 1 p.m.
