Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans advanced to their 13th consecutive North Atlantic Conference Championship game today with an impressive 15-5 semifinal victory over Husson at Spartan Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Castleton led 8-0 and had an 18-1 shot advantage after the first quarter, before eventually finishing with a 47-28 edge in shots. The Spartans also picked up 27 more ground balls, 44-17, and won 21 of 24 faceoffs to improve to 11-6 overall. The Eagles turned the ball over 16 times as they ended their season with a 6-10 record.
Senior Taylor Swarter was dynamic around the goal, with three goals, three assists, five ground balls and one caused turnover. Sam Siegel also recorded three goals and three assists, while Tom Pardew chipped in a hat trick with one assist and two ground balls. Joshua Gosselin won 15 of 16 faceoffs and picked up eight ground balls.
Husson senior Brandon Corbo scored four of his team's five goals on 11 shots to lead the offense. Trent Sell added one goal and three ground balls while Ben Morris caused a pair of turnovers.
The Spartans jumped on the board at 11:23 as Pardew fed Siegel right in front for a nice goal. Connor Kelly and Kyle Lutinski added back-to-back goals in the next two minutes and Pardew made it 4-0 at 8:27. Alhage pushed the lead to 5-0 just over a minute later and Castleton scored three more times in the quarter for an 8-0 edge.
Siegel scored 1:08 into the second, but Corbo responded with back-to-back scores to make the deficit to 9-2. Pardew and Corbo each registered one more goal in the period for a 10-3 margin at the half.
In the third, Sell made it 10-4 at 13:16, but goals by Swarter, Pardew and Siegel extended the lead to 13-4 after three. Castleton outscored Husson 2-1 in the fourth, with a goal from Zach Devoid providing the final tally.
Freshman Peyton Faasse caused three turnovers with four ground balls while Mack O'Connell had two caused turnovers and Lutinski added two goals and two assists.
Senior Peter Latulippe earned the win in net, giving up five goals while making 11 saves. Matt Martin took the loss for the Eagles as he allowed 15 goals and stopped 14 shots.
The Spartans will now face the winner of top seed New England College and No. 4 Lyndon, who play today at 5:30 pm.
