Men's Soccer Clinches No. 2 Seed in NAC Championship Tournament with Win at Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Maine – The Castleton men's soccer team picked up a crucial, 2-0 win in North Atlantic Conference action on Sunday afternoon against Maine Maritime at Ritchie Field.

The Spartans finish their NAC schedule with a 7-2 mark to lock up the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming NAC Championship tournament. Maine Maritime finishes the NAC season with a 5-4 mark.

Thomas Kirk and Josh Mathews each tallied goals in the victory, while Aaron Parker recorded his second-straight shutout, making five saves in the contest.

Kirk got Castleton on the board first, as the sophomore defender tallied a 25th minute goal to send the Spartans into the half leading 1-0.

In the 57th minute, Mathews doubled the Castleton lead to 2-0 when he finished a ball from Paul Phillips.

The Spartans had a 22-10 shot advantage in the game, including a 9-5 lead in shots on goal. The Spartans also earned 15 corner kicks—the most they've had in a game this season. Each team had nine fouls in the contest.

Thomas earned the top seed in the NAC tournament with a win today, finishing the season unbeaten in conference play. Colby-Sawyer is the No. 3 seed after finishing 6-2-1, while Husson (6-2-1) gets the No. 4 seed after losing a tiebreaker to Colby-Sawyer. New England College (5-4) and Maine Maritime (5-4) round out the field as the Nos. 5 and 6 seeds.

Castleton wraps up its regular season on Wednesday against Southern Vermont College at Spartan Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
