Box Score POULTNEY, Vt. – The Castleton men's soccer team came away with its second consecutive shutout victory on Saturday, downing Green Mountain by a final score of 5-0 in a North Atlantic Conference matchup.
Fidele Rutayisire's two-goal performance helps move the Spartans to 3-5-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Green Mountain falls to 0-8 overall, and 0-3 in the NAC.
Four of the team's five goals came from first-year Spartans, as Jack Kingdon and Josh Mathews joined Rutayisire in the goal column. Tatenda Shumba tallied the lone goal of the second half to give the game its final score. Dan Palker and Aaron Parker combined for the shutout, with the victory going to Palker and a pair of saves going to Parker.
Castleton got on the board early, as Rutayisire struck unassisted in just the ninth minute of the contest. Kingdon then doubled the Spartan lead to 2-0 when he easily buried a loose ball after teammate Derek Blouin's initial shot was turned aside by the Eagle's keeper Sawyer Levy.
Castleton tallied yet another first-half goal in the 25th minute on Mathews's first goal of the season. The Spartans closed out the half on Rutayisire's second goal of the contest in the 36th minute.
Shumba scored the lone goal of the second half on an excellent individual effort as he maneuvered past the Eagle's defense and ripped a shot home for a 5-0 lead.
Castleton is back on the pitch next Saturday, Oct. 8, when it hosts the University of Maine-Farmington at 3:30 p.m.
