Box Score CANTON, N.Y. – Freshman Sam Siegel scored the biggest goal of his young career in overtime to lift the Spartans to a hard-fought 6-5 overtime victory against SUNY Canton on the road on Wednesday evening.
Following a caused turnover by Alex Denny in the team's defensive end, the Spartans went on the attack and senior Zach Davidson found Siegel for the game-winner with just 1:41 left in overtime. It is the team's first OT win since Castleton beat Maine Maritime 11-10 on April 10, 2011.
Castleton dominated both shots and faceoffs, outshooting the Roos 53-35 and winning 10 of 15 faceoffs. However, Canton goalie Corey Spuck was lights out, stopping 21 shots. Spartan goalie Sam Polas was strong as well, making eight saves while giving up five goals to earn his first win of the year.
Davidson led the offense with one goal and two assists while Siegel finish with two goals, three ground balls and one caused turnover. Denny added a goal, four caused turnoves and three ground balls while Sam Frackleton picked up a team-high five ground balls.
Ryan Cardiff had three goals and one assist with four ground balls and one caused turnover for Canton. Tony Carden added eight ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Sophomore midfielder Sean Paradis gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead with 2:18 left in the first, on the team's 13th shot of the period. Castleton's kept on shooting but Spuck was a wall, holding the visitors scoreless in the second quarter. Cardiff tied up the game with 8:58 remaining and then he gave the Roos a 2-1 lead on a goal with six seconds left in the half.
Davidson scored at 11:27 in the third to even the game at two apiece and Drew Wood followed with a goal 39 seconds later to give the Spartans a 3-2 advantage. Cardiff tied the game with 7:58 remaining but Denny responded with a goal off a feed from Davidson for the one-goal lead at 7:19. The Roos scored once more to end the third at 4-4.
In the fourth, Canton struck first as Steve Novak pushed his team in front 5-4 at 9:19. Siegel scored his first of the game just 1:15 later to tie it up once again. Both teams had chance in the last eight minutes but couldn't convert to send the game to overtime.
Each team got off one shot in the opening minutes before the Denny caused turnover gave Castleton their final possession.
The Spartans improve to 3-4 with the victory while Canton drops to 0-5. Castleton returns to action on Saturday when the team plays at Thomas at 3:30 pm.
