Box Score Providence, R.I – Castleton was unable to find the back of net for the second straight game as Johnson & Wales opened its season with a 2-0 victory over the Spartans at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Johnson & Wales controlled the action early and got on the board first when sophomore Scott Lopez took the ball down the left sideline and fed a through ball to senior Doug Kase. Kase then sent a crossing pass to senior Kyle Metz, who buried a shot into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage. The Wildcats took the one goal lead heading into halftime after holding a 7-1 advantage in shots for the stanza.
The Wildcats upped the lead to 2-0 in the 65th minute when senior Dustin Hughes blasted in a shot from 10 yards out after a pass from Metz.
Ryan Dzierzawski tallied three saves in goal in the victory for JWU while sophomore Dan had five stops in the loss for Castleton.
The Spartans look to notch their first victory of the year on Sept. 6 when they travel to MCLA to face Union in the CIAO Classic.
