Box Score POULTNEY, Vt. – Castleton's men's soccer team returned to its winning ways on Friday, defeating Green Mountain in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) match 4-0.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 6-7-1 on the season and 4-2-1 in the NAC, while Green Mountain drops to 3-11 overall and 0-7 in the conference. Bryce Kaler, Owen Fellows, Dameon Young and Jake Tietgens each recorded a goal to help the Spartans pick up the victory.
Castleton opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Kaler rifled a shot from 22-yards out the flew into the top corner of the net to make it 1-0 in favor of the away side.
Just three minutes later, the Spartans struck again when Young found the back of the net for the third time this season. Tietgens delivered a shot on goal that was knocked away by the Eagles keeper Griffin Shellor, but Young was there to knock in the rebound to double Castleton's lead.
In the final minute of the first half, the Spartans tacked on two more goals to head into halftime with a 4-0 lead. Fellows scored the third goal of the match when he beat the keeper with a header from Seth Wilmott's cross, whle Tietgens tallied the fourth goal for Castleton after Alex Sedergren headed the ball towards Tietgens, and the junior parried a shot past the keeper.
The Spartans continued to pressure the Eagles defense in the remaining 45 minutes, but were unable to finish any chances.
In the 74th minute, Castleton had its best opportunity of the second half when Blake Hart fired a shot towards goal, but it narrowly missed, smashing off the post.
Overall, the Spartans outshot their opponents 20-14 with four shots on target and held the edge in corners kicks by five.
In net, Dan Palker, Amir Pasic and Aaron Parker cobmined to record a shutout victory. Pasic picked up the win after producing three saves in 76 minutes of action. For Green Mountain, Shelor picked up the loss after allowing four goals with four saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Spartans continue their season on Saturday when they travel to Union (N.Y.) to play their second match in the CIAO Classic beginning at 7 pm. The contest was originally slated for September, but was delayed due to severe weather.
