Box Score Castleton, Vt. - The Spartans took the Eagles to extra time but couldn't find a winning goal, settling for a 1-1 draw against Husson at Spartan Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Drazen Smith netted the Spartans lone goal, while goalkeeper Nate Koenemann finished with four saves on the day. His Husson counterpart Brian Potter accumulated 10 saves.
In the first half, each team had opportunities go begging as the Eagles and Spartans played to a scoreless tie through the first frame. In the 26th minute, Bryce Kaler had an opportunity to put the home team ahead. The Spartan forward slipped away from Kyle Hargreaves, who shadowed him all game, and ripped a shot that Brian Potter saved.
In the final seconds of play in the first half, the Eagles got their best opportunity to go ahead. Freshman Jimmy Fitzpatrick beat a defender with the dribble down the right flank and ripped a shot. Spartan goalkeeper Nate Koenemann made a sprawling save, keeping the shot out of the goal and preserving the tie into the break.
With just over 15 minutes remaining the Spartans took a 1-0 lead off a corner kick set piece. Spencer Dandurand tapped the ball into play where Bryce Kaler picked it up. The forward tapped it back to Dandurand who ran an overlap behind him. Dandurand crossed the ball to the back post where Smith finished it off with a header to put Castleton up a goal.
With 6:52 left in the game, Charles Bujambi found the equalizer for the Eagles to level the score at 1-1. Joshua Bean ripped a corner kick that Bujambi elevated and redirected into the net, past the hands of Nate Koenemann. Neither team was able to find the net in the final seven minutes, and the tilt went into extra time.
Castleton dominated the first overtime period, outshooting the Eagles 6-0 in the 10-minute frame. Blake Hart had a golden opportunity in the final 10 seconds of the half. The forward beat a Husson defender and found space near the top of the 18-yard box. He ripped a shot that beat Potter, but went glancing past the right post and out of bounds as time expired.
In the final period the Spartans continued to apply offensive pressure, dominating possession of the ball for the majority of the extra time. As time expired, Castleton had several opportunities, the best of which came on a cross from John Kendall as time expired. Dandurand connected with a header but sent it right into the hands of Potter as the buzzer sounded.
With the draw, Castleton moves to 5-2-2, 2-1-1 on the season while Husson moves to 2-4-3, 2-0-2. The Spartans return to action on Friday, October 4 when they host Green Mountain College in a NAC battle.
