Castleton, Vt. - The Castleton Spartans lit up their scoreboard, netting four goals in a ten-minute span on their way to a 5-0 win over North Atlantic Conference foe Maine Maritime Academy at Spartan Stadium on Saturday.

Five different players scored for the Spartans, who posted their fourth shutout of the season. Owen Fellows netted a goal and dished off two assists, while Nate Koenemann made nine saves for Castleton in the win, improving his personal record in net to 5-2-1.

The Spartans struggled to generate chances early in the contest, mustering very few shots in the first 30 minutes of play, but in the 33rd minute the home team broke the seal. Off a corner kick, Fellows collected the ball and dropped it to the top of the 18-yard box where Drazen Smith was waiting. The defenseman blasted a rocket past MMA keeper Jesse Perkins to put the Spartans up 1-0.

Fellows netted a goal just 1:43 later when Spencer Dandurand crossed a ball from the left flank. Fellows earned a half-step on a defender in the center of the box, and with very little clearance, lunged to head the ball, directing it to the side netting to extend the Spartan lead to 2-0.

In the 42nd minute, Castleton added a third goal when Yosef Osheyack found the net on his first touch of the game. Justin Hepburn slipped a ball into the box where Osheyack ran onto it and slotted it past Perkins for the score. In under a minute, Castleton scored again. Co-captain John Kendall beat Perkins to put the Spartans up 4-0 going into the halftime break.

In the second half, Castleton added a fifth goal despite being outshot 12-2 in the frame. Fellows drove the ball deep down the left flank, creating space for Dameon Young who buried a cross from the six-yard line to put the Spartans up 5-0.

The Mariners suffer their first loss in NAC play, dropping to 1-1-1 in the conference standings. Jesse Perkins took the loss in net, making a pair of saves, but allowing four goals in the first half. Benjamin Cummings relived him, playing goalie in the second half. Cummings allowed one goal and did not register a save.

With the win, Castleton improves to 5-2-1 on the season and will compete against another NAC foe tomorrow when they host Husson at 12:00pm.
