Box Score Castleton, Vt. - In their opening match of the 2013 season, Castleton dominated posession and provided constant offensive pressure as they downed Centennial (Ont.) 3-0 at Spartan Stadium on Friday evening.
The Spartans received a spectacular effort from freshman Owen Fellows in his debut with the club. The freshman netted his first career goal and first career assist after coming off the bench for the home squad.
Castleton broke the scoring seal with a seamless connection in the 13th minute. Defender Justin Hepburn launched a long cross from the right side to a streaking Spencer Dandurand. In full stride, Dandurand leaped and struck the ball with his head, sending it over the keeper and into the net for the squad's first score of the season.
In the 45th minute, Fellows created his own chance, disposessing Centennial goalkeeper Peter Karaskas and calmly slotting the ball into the open net to put the Spartans up 2-0 just before halftime.
In the second half, Castleton continued to dominate posession and maintained pressure as they pelted the Centennial defense with a flurry of advances. It was not until the 89th minute that the Spartans found the net again. Fellows received the ball on the left flank and found Vinny Addonisio in the middle of the box to beat the Centennial keeper and earn the Spartans' third goal.
Senior goalkeeper Nate Koenemann was sparsely challenged, but made one save on the Colts' only shot on goal to preserve his first shutout of the season.
Castleton will return to action when they travel to Southern Vermont on Sept. 4 for their first of three consecutive road games. The Spartans' will play their next home game on Sept. 11 when they host Plattsburgh St.
