Box Score Castleton, Vt. - The Spartans unbeaten streak grew to four games as the squad downed the Green Mountain Eagles 5-0 on Friday night at Spartan Stadium. Senior co-captain John Kendall netted a pair of goals off the bench to lead the home team to a conference victory.
Nate Koenemann finished with one save to earn the shutout, his fourth of the year. The senior earned his 32nd career win in net, second most in Castleton history. Nate Laymon made six saves and took the loss for the Eagles.
Dameon Young started the Spartan scoring with a goal in the 25th minute. The junior collected a ball at the top of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot that skipped along the turf and past Nate Laymon to put Castleton up 1-0.
Just over two minutes later, Kendall converted off of a Spartan set piece to put the Spartans up 2-0. Spencer Dandurand lined up the kick from the left flank and lifted it across the goal mouth. Kendall lunged as the ball skipped through to the back post and the senior buried it to add to the tally.
Kendall tallied again in the 44th minute to extend the Spartan lead to 3-0. The midfielder beat the Green Mountain defender in a 40-yard sprint down the field on a lofted ball, and slotted the ball past the keeper to put Castleton up three goals just before halftime.
In the second half, Castleton benefitted from a defensive mistake when Owen Fellows drew a foul inside of the Green Mountain box. Dameon Young stepped up and converted the penalty kick to put the Spartans up 4-0. Jake Tietgens added a goal late in the game, scoring on a breakaway in the 81st minute to cap the Spartan scoring at 5-0.
Castleton improves to 6-2-2 on the season, with a 3-1-1 record within the NAC. The squad will return to action when they host SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7:00pm.
