Spartans Win an OT Thriller over Thomas

Waterville, Maine - Castleton avenged a loss last season by taking down the Thomas College Terriers 1-0 in overtime on Saturday afternoon. Nate Koenemann notched his seventh shutout of the year and Bryce Kaler scored the game's only goal to give the Spartans their sixth conference win of the season.

The Spartans and Terriers sparred back and forth for the first two periods, with Thomas barely outshooting the visiting Spartans 11-8 in regulation. Koenemann parried all attempts sent his way, making a pair of saves on his way to a shutout.

In the 69th, Thomas forward Dakota Duplissie was removed from the game after receiving a red card. The Terriers were forced to play a man down for the rest of the contest. Despite their man advantage, Castleton failed to convert in the final 20 minutes of regulation, and after 90 minutes, both teams remained scoreless.

In the overtime period, the Spartans yielded three corner kicks, but did not allow a shot. On the squad's first shot of the period, Castleton forward Bryce Kaler collected the ball in the middle of the field, took a dribble to his left a ripped a rocket that beat Mikkail Crockwell and found the net to give the Spartans the instant victory.

With the two-save shutout, Koenemann earned his 11th win of the season, and his 38th win in net for his career. The senior bypassed Bryan Deloatch ('84, 37 wins) and Mike Anthony ('09, 37 wins) to become Castleton's all-time leader in wins as a goalie.

The win improved Castleton to 11-3-2 on the season, including a 6-1-1 record against NAC opponents. The win over Thomas tied the program record for most wins in a season guaranteed the Spartans to host a NAC quarterfinal match. On Sunday, the Spartans face Maine-Farmington at 2:30pm. With a win, the squad would earn the top seed and right to host in the NAC tournament.
