Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vermont – Castleton conceded early and struggled to counter as the Middlebury College Panthers abruptly brought the squad's eight-game unbeaten streak to an end with a 9-1 win over the Spartans on Tuesday afternoon.
Middlebury scored three goals in a 3:36 span beginning in the 19th minute of the first half to take a 3-0 advantage. Greg Conrad, Dan Skayne, and Adam Glaser each scored during that time. Leading 3-0, the Panthers netted two goals in seven seconds to make it a 5-0 game. Deklan Robinson scored on a header on a cross from Harper Williams, while Alex Davidson netted the first of his career after a pass from Glaser. Brandon Robinson scored his first career goal with 1:04 left in the half on a penalty kick.
Castleton broke up the shutout early in the second half, with the fourth of the year from Jake Tietgens after some quick passing in the box. Spencer Dandurand beat a defender down the left flank, found John Kendall on the near post who flicked it on to Tietgens. Tietgens converted a one-timer for the goal to snap Middlebury's hopes of a shutout, but it was all the offense Castleton could muster.
Middlebury held a 24-5 shots advantage in the game, with a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Ethan Collins made one save in the first half before giving way to Duncan Piper, who made a pair of second half stops in his collegiate debut for the Panthers. Nate Koenemann earned seven saves over 84:30, while Dan Palker played the final 5:30 between the posts for the Spartans.
Castleton sees its eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end, but will return to action this weekend, taking on Thomas College on Saturday in Waterville, Maine and then Maine-Farmington on Sunday.
