Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans scored early and often in their conference opener, taking down Lyndon St. 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
Ten different players registered at least one point, including six different goal scorers as Castleton improved to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Spartans outshot the Hornets 48-3 as they fell to 1-5 on the year and 0-1 in conference play.
Castleton came out aggressive and was rewarded at the 13:01 mark. Senior Dillon Zaengle (Westhampton, Mass.) chipped a ball into the 18 for a waiting Bryce Kaler (Burnt Hills, N.Y.). Kaler anticipated the pass, turned his body to receive it and without taking a touch, rifled a shot past a helpless Jason Gray (East Thetford, Vt.) for the 1-0 lead.
In the 39th minute, Castleton added to their lead on a goal by Trevor Kotrady (No. Clarendon, Vt.). Senior Nick Johnas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) sent in a cross from the far side of the 18 to Kotrady waiting on the near post. He headed the ball through Gray's legs for the two-goal advantage.
Zaengle added his second assist of the evening in the 41st minute off a free kick. Positioned just outside the 18 on the far side of the field, he sent a ball to the near post for Dominic Heller (Glenville, N.Y.), who connected on the header.
The Spartans added to their lead just nine minutes into the second half. Freshman Danny Favreau (Arlington, Vt.) received the ball just inside the 18 on the near baseline and with virtually no angle somehow snuck the ball inside of Gray and around the near post for his third goal of the season.
Lyndon St. got on the board in the 59th minute on a goal by Kyle Mecham (Wilbraham, Mass.), who scored off a headed pass by Patrice Lumumba (Burlington, Vt.) right in front of the net.
Spencer Dandurand (Colchester, Vt.) got on the board in the 62nd minute off a nice pass from Favreau. The freshman carried the ball inside the 18 and got Gray to commit before slipping a nice pass across the box to Dandurand for the easy one-timer.
Freshman Blake Hart (Farmington, Maine) concluded the scoring in the 83rd minute off a pass from sophomore Alex Sedergren (Windsor, Conn.).
Junior Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) allowed one goal without having to make a save for his fifth win of the season. Gray finished with 12 saves but took the loss for Lyndon.
Castleton returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Plymouth St. at 7 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
