Potsdam, N.Y. - The Castleton men's soccer team got its season off the right foot, with a pair of goals in a 2-0 win over Hilbert to advance to the championship of the Potsdam College Cup on Saturday afternoon.

The win gives the Spartans their first season-opening victory since 2009. They now advance to play host Potsdam at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday for the championship.

Castleton got on the board in the 21st minute courtesy of an own goal as the ball deflected off a Hilbert defender and found the back of the net. The Spartans pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute when Nick Johnas (Bennington, Vt.), found Dameon Young (Fairfax, Vt.) for the score.

Neither team was able to break through in the second half as Castleton more than doubled up Hilbert in shot attempts, owning a 13-6 advantage.

Junior Nate Koenamann (Montpelier, Vt.) needed to make four saves to earn his first win of the season. Castleton, meanwhile, forced keeper Kraska Jeremy to make eight stops in net.
