Castleton Pulls Away for 18-10 win Over Southern Maine

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Spartans doubled up Southern Maine 10-5 in the second half on their way to an impressive 18-10 victory over the visiting Huskies at Spartans Stadium on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) paced the offense with four goals and four assists for a team-high eight points as Castleton improved to 2-2 on the season. Southern Maine dropped to 2-3 with the loss. Senior Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) also had four goals and eight different players scored in all.

The Spartans got on the board first as Kate Auer (So. Glens Fall, N.Y.) scored just two minutes into the game. Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) added a free position shot at the 24:37 mark to make it a 2-0 lead.

The Huskies countered with a 3-1 run, ending with 15:06 remaining in the first half, on a goal by Julia Pearl (Essex Jct., Vt.) to tie the score, 3-3. Mazzola ended the run 28 seconds later and Flodstrom pushed the Spartan lead to 5-3 at the 13:56 mark.

Clark scored again to make it 6-3 and the two teams traded goals over the final 10:18 of the half to give Castleton an 8-5 advantage going into the break.

In the second half, Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.) opened the scoring with 23:14 left, jumpstarting a 4-1 run by the Spartans to push their lead to 12-6. A goal by Rosie Forster (Andover, Mass.) stemmed the bleeding, but Mazzola went on a personal three-goal run and JenniLee Mark (Chelmsford, Mass.) added another at the 4:59 mark to grab a 16-7 advantage.

The Huskies tried to counter with three straight over the next three minutes, but Castleton added two goals in the final 1:30 to finish with the 18-10 victory.

The Spartans went 5-for-7 on free position shots in the first half and finished the game 5-for-9, while the Huskies were only 2-for-4. Castleton also outshot Southern Maine 40-33 and picked up 15 more ground balls, 34-19.

Junior Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, R.I.) was strong in net once again, making 12 saves. Her counterpart, Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) finished with 15 saves in net.

The Spartans return to action on Friday at 5 p.m. when they travel to face RPI.
