Spartans' Season Ends at Maine Maritime

CASTINE, MAINE—Maine Maritime Academy's  Nicholas George had himself a day in the Mariners 2-1 over Castleton in the North Atlantic Conference quarterfinals  Saturday. The junior forward scored MMA's first goal, and assisted on its final, to help advance the Mariners (10-7) to Tuesday's semifinals at Thomas, a 4-0 winner over Green Mountain.

George (Bangor, Maine) put MMA on the board at the 13:56 mark when he netted a Matt Leblanc (Dayton, Maine) pass to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. Castleton (11-7) needed less than three minutes to score the equalizer when Nick Johnas (North Bennington, Vt.) headed in a Dillon Zaengle (Westhampton, Mass.) free kick at 16:35.
 
Both defenses tightened up in the next 40 minutes before George found Abdullah Alkhayyat (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia), at 58:32, for the eventual game-winner. Mariners' goalie William Trace Lacour (Charlottesville, Va.) helped preserve the win with a pair of key saves in the final eight minutes. He stoned Dominic Heller at 82:06 and stopped a Bryce Kaler shot two minutes later. Lacour finished with four saves.

The Spartans outshot MMA, 20-13, and received four saves from keeper Nate Koenemann Montpelier, Vt.).
