Box Score CASTINE, MAINE – Castleton suffered its second loss of the weekend to the hands of Maine Maritime Academy in extra time on Sunday afternoon.
Abdullah Alkhayyat (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) drilled a shot in the 102nd minute to lift Maine Maritime Academy to a 3-2, double-overtime win over Castleton in a North Atlantic Conference contest. The Spartans fall to 9-6 (3-4 in the NAC) on the season.
Castleton fell behind early when Alkhayyat found Nicholas George (Bangor, Maine) for a score in the 23rd minute. The Spartans were able to tie the score in the waning minutes of the first half. A foul in the MMA box resulted in a penalty kick for Castleton. Zac Conlogue (Farmington, Maine) stepped up to the 12-yard mark and drilled the shot past Mariners goalkeeper William Trace Lacour (Charlottesville, Va.) tying the score at 1-1.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the second half when Trevor Kotrady (No. Clarendon, Vt.) found Bryce Kaler (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) for a one-time score in the 52nd minute. The Spartans took a 2-1 lead on the score. Mariners forward Benjamin Russell (Farmington, Maine) netted a shot, off a pass from David Clough (Mt. Vernon, Maine), late in the second half to level the tilt at 2-2.
After 90 minutes, the score was still locked at two, and the match went to extra time. The first overtime period went scoreless, but early in the second extra period, the Mariners were able to break through. Alkhayyat found himself in the right place at the right time after a scrum in front of the Castleton net, and placed it home for the winning goal.
The Spartans held a 23-20 shot advantage over the course of the game but Mariners' keeper William Trace Lacour (Charlottesville, Va.) preserved their win, finishing with 11 saves. Castleton goalie Nate Koenemann stopped six shots on goal.
The Spartans return to action Wednesday, October 17, when they travel to Johnson St. in another NAC battle.
