Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – Castleton's Bryce Kaler (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) scored against Roger Williams in the final five minutes to tie the contest at two apiece, but neither team could break through in two overtimes as the squads played to a 2-2 draw at Bayside Field on Saturday in the Seventh Annual Turfer Athletic Classic.

The Hawks and Spartans battled to a scoreless stalemate in the first half with little scoring opportunities on either side. Contentious play on the ball kept shots at a minimum, as the two sides combined for nine shots (six for RWU, three for Castleton) but only one shot on goal apiece.

The second half saw more action in net, starting with a diving save by Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) in the 54th minute for the Hawks. Pelloso turned away a shot by Kaler and then less than ten minutes later RMU's Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine) found the back of the net off a pass by Bradley Macdonald (Topsfield, Mass.) to put the home team up 1-0.

Castleton answered in the 69th minute, when Trevor Kotrady (North Clarendon, Vt.) intercepted a clearing pass just outside the box and put one past Pelloso to tie the score at one. The Hawks went back on top 2-1 in the 75th minute as Liam Isleib (Killingworth, Conn.) scored on a leaping attempt from a Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) pass.

Trailing by one, Kaler took advantage of a missed clear in the 86th minute. The freshman dribbled the ball down the right side and then deposited the ball in the back of the net to tie the score at two and send the contest into overtime.

In the extra periods, Castleton outshot RWU 7-1 but couldn't get a goal. The Spartans had their best opportunity to score with two minutes left in the second overtime period, with Brady Corbiere (Highgate, Vt.) just overshooting a cross to a streaking Dillon Zaengle (Westhampton, Mass.) down the middle. The clock eventually wound down and both teams settled for the draw.

Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) stopped three shots for Castleton while Pelloso made four saves for the Hawks.

The Spartans move to 0-0-1 and take on Rhode Island College in the Turfer Athletic Classic on Sunday at 11 a.m.
