Box Score BANGOR, Maine – Sophomore attackman Nohea King (St. Albans, Vt.) and Sam Bailey (Hartford, Vt.) both notched hat tricks to lead Castleton over Husson, 10-9, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Boucher Field.
The Spartans improve to 4-5 overall on the season and 2-0 in NAC play. The Eagles fall to 2-8 (1-1 NAC).
Offensively for Castleton, Adam Groot (Canadaigua, NY) scored a pair and assisted another to become the third Castleton player with three points backing up King and Bailey's efforts. Phil Patterson (Essex, Vt.) and Luke Titus (So. Burlington, Vt.) also added goals in the win.
Craig MacDerment (Clifton Park, NY) helped the Spartans earn the victory winning 16-of-19 faceoffs while scooping a game-high 11 ground balls.
Husson's Matt Sweeney (Norwood, MA) led the Eagles in scoring with three goals and Ben Landry (Lewiston, Maine) also had three points, scoring two and assisting on another. John Hooper (Wakefield, RI) had a good day in net despite the loss, turning in 15 saves on the afternoon.
Down 7-6 to headed into the fourth quarter, the Spartans rallied behind Bailey as the sophomore attackman scored a pair of goals within the first two minutes to tie up the contest. Groot gave the Spartans their biggest lead of the contest at 9:29 taking a 9-7 advantage in the game.
Husson responded at 6:49 as Chris Pelletier (Rome, Maine) found the back of the net past Castleton goaltender Dave DeGhetto (Clifton, N.J.) pushing the score to 9-8. Moments later, the Eagles came up with the equalizer as DeGhetto attempted to clear the ball from his crease but Sweeney deflected the ball loose and batted into the goal.
King tallied the game-winner at 3:59 ripping a shot past Hooper from the right side of the net to complete his hat trick.
DeGhetto made five saves total in net for Castleton. Both teams committed 28 turnovers on the afternoon while the clears matchup was tightly contest as the Spartans went a perfect 18-for-18 on clears and the Eagles were 16-of-17.
The Spartans outshot Husson 47-28 and grabbed 10 more groundballs than the Eagles (38-28).
The Eagles return to action tomorrow for a 12:00 pm start when they host Green Mountain College. Castleton continues their central Maine swing when they travel to Castine to play Maine Maritime Academy tomorrow for a 1:00 pm start.
