Green notches seven-point game, Castleton defeats Thomas 22-5

CASTLETON, Vt. – Freshman attackman Alex Green (Braintree, Vt.) collected seven points while teammates Sam Bailey (Hartford, Vt.) and Brian McCarthy (Johnson, Vt.) both notched hat tricks to lead Castleton over Thomas, 22-5, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans improve to 6-6 overall and 4-0 in NAC play. The Terriers fall to 2-7 and 2-2 in the NAC.

Green tallied game-highs in goals with four and assists with three to pace the Castleton offense. Alongside hat tricks from Bailey and McCarthy, sophomore attackman Nohea King (St. Albans, Vt.), Adam Groot (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and Robert Woods (Peekskill, N.Y.) added two goals apiece. David Whitlock (Randolph, Vt.), Phil Patterson (Essex, Vt.), Derek Riley (Randolph, Vt.), Will Stuhler (Madison, N.J.), Jake Krantz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and Owen Hartman (St. Albans, Vt.) chipped in with a goal each.

For Thomas, Scott Dumas (Topsham, Maine) and Matt Quesada (Coram, N.Y.) led the Terriers with two goals apiece. Kevin Averill (New Sharon, Maine) chipped in with one goal to round out the scoring.

Bailey opened up the scoring for Castleton at 14:10 of the first as the sophomore attackman finished on a beautiful feed from Groot past Thomas' goaltender Jesse Morkeski (Damariscotta, Maine) for a 1-0 lead.

Groot made it 2-0 moments later at 13:23 ripping a shot behind Morkeski for his 13th of the season on a pass from Bailey from the top of the attacking zone.

Castleton poured in four more goals to end the first quarter with a 6-0 lead.

In the second, Green gave the Spartans a 7-0 advantage at 14:38 netting his 26th marker of the season. Craig MacDerment (Clifton Park, N.Y.) set up the goal with his first assist of the season.

Queseda finally got Thomas on the scoreboard at 13:28 firing an unassisted tally past Castleton goaltender Dave DeGhetto (Clifton, N.J.) for his 12th of the season.

The Spartans responded with five unanswered goals to put the game away. Dumas notched his fourth of the season at 2:50 if the second quarter, his fourth of the season, to make it 12-2 before Castleton found the back of the net twice more to close out the half at 14-2. The Spartans finished up the contest outscoring the Terriers 8-3 in the second half.

DeGhetto made three saves in 34:46 minutes of action only allowing two goals. Backup goaltender Tom Manley (Londonderry, N.H.) stopped two shots in 25:14 minutes of play. Morkeski finished out the contest turning away a game-high 20 shots in the loss.

MacDerment went 12-of-14 in the faceoff circle while teammate Andrew Shea (Westfield, Mass) went 11-for-15. The Spartans won the groundballs match up 68-31 and outshot the Terriers 66-17.

Castleton returns to action tomorrow, at home, against NAC opponent - the University of Maine-Farmington - at 11:00 am.
