Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – Colby College scored four-straight goals to open the third period to break a 3-3 tie, and earn a 9-6 win over Castleton State College in non-conference men's lacrosse action Thursday evening at Spartan Stadium
With the win, the Mules improve to 3-2, while Castleton remains winless at 0-4.
John Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) broke the 3-3 tie with just over 12 minutes to go in the third period, converting an unassisted tally that started the four-goal barrage. Jennings assisted on a Derrick Flahive (Littleton, Colo.) marker just three minutes later to push the Mule lead to 5-3. Scott Margolis (New York, N.Y.) and Ian Deveau (Portsmouth, R.I.) also scored, before an Adam Groot (Canandaigua, N.Y.) goal stopped the bleeding for Castleton.
Jennings led the Mule attack with two goals and an assist, and Margolis added a pair of goals. John Moriarity (Winchester, Mass.), Jonathan McIvor (Sudbury, Mass.) and Ian Boldt (Millburn, N.J.) rounded out the scoring column for Colby.
Nohea King (St. Albans, Vt.) led the Spartans with two goals and two assists, while Sam Bailey (Hartford, Vt.) added two goals. Will Stuhler (Madison, N.J.) notched a goal with 11 seconds remaining in the contest to round out the Castleton scoring.
Trailing 1-0 inside of 10 minutes remaining in the first period, Bailey scored a pair of opportunistic goals to give Castleton a 2-1 lead. The sophomore corralled a loose ball in front of the cage to knot the score at 1-1 with 9:31 remaining, and grabbed a rebound off a beautiful save from Peter Reiley (Marblehead, Mass.) and deposited it for his third goal of the year.
Colby owned a 36-20 advantage in the shot column, but the solid play of Dave DeGhetto (Clifton, N.J.) in between the Castleton pipes kept the Spartans close. DeGhetto finished with 19 saves on the evening. Reilly wound up with nine for the Mules.
The Mules also won the battle for possession, winning 13-of-19 face-offs and garnering 45 ground balls to 26 for Castleton.
The Spartans return to non-conference action Saturday when they play host to Southern Maine at 3:30 p.m.
