Box Score BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Castleton State College men's soccer team controlled play for 90 minutes, but could not overcome Nick Haggerty's (Wynantskill, N.Y.) goal in the 16th minute of play, falling 1-0 to Southern Vermont College Wednesday evening in non-conference action. With the loss Castleton falls to 1-2 while Southern Vermont improves to 3-1.
Castleton held a 22-5 edge in shots, and a 14-2 margin in corner kicks, but 10 saves from keeper Aaron Eschler (Gloversville, N.Y.) and Haggerty's early tally provided the only margin that counted at the end of the contest.
Haggerty settled a misplayed ball out of the Spartan backfield, and was able to fire his shot past Castleton keeper Andy LaCroix (Jamaica, Vt.). The goal was Haggerty's third of the season, and gave the Mountaineers their first win over Castleton since a 1-0 overtime win in 1999.
LaCroix stopped the only other shot that came his way on the evening.
Castleton returns to action on Sunday when the Spartans travel to SUNY-Cobleskill for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match up.
