CASTLETON, Vt. - Tanner LeCuyer (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal and assisted on another to lead Castleton State College to a 3-1 win over Thomas College in North Atlantic Conference (NAC men's soccer action at Spartan Stadium.

LeCuyer (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) broke a scoreless tie in the 21st minute, scoring his first of the season. Thomas turned away the initial Spartan attempt off a corner kick, but LeCuyer settled a loose ball in the box and struck a rocket past goalie Mikkail Crockwell (Bermuda). Castleton nearly made it 2-0 just two minutes later on a pretty play between Chris Mulholland (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) and Josh Costa (Sutton, Mass.). Mulholland played a five-yard back pass towards the middle of the goal and Costa unleashed towards the far post, but Crockwell was able to dive headlong and make an incredible save.

The Spartans did push the lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute as Brendan Hoffman (Stephentown, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal off a Trevor Kotrady (Clarendon, Vt.) assist. The Terriers cut the lead to one just two minutes later, converting on a corner kick. Edwin Reyes (Dallas, Texas) played the corner into the center of the box and Paul Rechichi (Australia) ran through the ball for his third goal of the season.

Castleton grabbed the two-goal lead back just prior to halftime, on an incredible hook up between LeCuyer and Tim Sherman (Bellport, N.Y.). LeCuyer played a direct kick from 75 yards out, all the way into the 18-yard box where Sherman redirected it just inside the far post.

Crockwell ended the afternoon with two first-half saves, as much of the second half was a battle for possession. Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) stopped two shots in the first half to earn the win for Castleton, while Andy LaCroix (Jamaica, Vt.) was untested in 45 second-half minutes.

Castleton and Thomas return to conference action tomorrow, with the Spartans hosting University of Maine-Farmington and the Terriers traveling to Green Mountain. Both games are scheduled for 12-noon kick-offs.
