Castleton tripped up at MCLA

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.. - The Castleton State College men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) Wednesday evening at Ron Shewcraft Field. With the loss the Spartans slipped to 3-4, while the Trailblazers improved to 4-2-1.

George Sullivan (Milton, Mass.) notched the game-winner for the Trailblazers in the 73rd minute of play. Patrick Endy (Catskill, N.Y.) sent a through pass to Ryan Shewchuk (Springfield, Mass.) who crossed to Sullivan for the goal. The goal was Sullivan's third of the season. Castleton put together several attempts to find the equalizer, but could not get a solid attempt on net.

Sullivan converted a Luke Davis (Bedford, Mass.) cross into his second goal of the season to break a scoreless tie in the 16th minute of play. Castleton then controlled play for the remainder of the first half, and finally broke through to tie the score in the 33rd minute. Josh Costa (Sutton, Mass.) tallied his seventh goal of the season off an assist from Billy Lund (Monson, Mass.). Lund played a pass ahead to Costa who beat MCLA keeper Adam Tarsa (Adams, Mass.) to send the game onto the interval all square.

Tarsa stopped 11 shots to pick up the win, while freshman Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) made five saves in the loss. Castleton held a distinct 25-12 advantage in shots, but could only put about half on net in the loss.

The Spartans open their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) schedule this weekend when they play host to Thomas on Saturday and Maine-Farmington on Sunday.
