Castleton, VT - Craig MacDerment (Clifton Park, NY) scored with 53.2 seconds remaining in the first overtime to propel Castleton to a 10-9 win over Norwich in non-conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday evening at Spartan Stadium.

MacDerment received a crossing pass from Jake Rick (Rochester, NY) from left to right, and deposited his second goal of the game in the low right hand corner of the net.

With the win Castleton evens its record to 3-3-, while Norwich falls to 3-2.

MacDerment and Nohea King (St. Albans, VT) led the Spartans with a pair of goals, while Michael Martinez (Barrington, IL) added one goal and three assists. Korey Counous (St. Albans, VT), Daniel Luzzi (Oakland, NJ), Alexandre Brands (Woodstock, VT), Michael DelDotto (Reading, MA) and Kenneth Bourneuf (Waterbury, VT) each tallied single goals to round out the Spartan scoring.

Joe Galante (Framingham, MA) led the Cadet attack with three goals and one assist, while Kyle Marzeoti (Billerica, MA) added two goals and one assist. Jesse Mattson (Los Angeles, CA) had two goals, Michael White (Walpole, MA) one goal and one assist, and Patrick Sikora (Montpelier, VT) one goal to round out the Cadets in the scoring column.

After falling behind 1-0 early, Castleton reeled off three-straight goals and did not trail the rest of the way. Norwich did not make it easy however, cutting the lead to 5-4 at halftime on two late second period goals from Mattson and Galante respectively.

Castleton opened up a 9-6 lead with 10:49 remaining in the fourth period on King's eighth goal of the season, but the Cadets ended the period by scoring three unanswered to send the game to overtime. Goals from Marzeoti and Galante cut the lead to 9-8, but with 1:19 a Norwich penalty put Castleton on the one-minute man-advantage. Castleton turned the ball over in its attack zone, and Norwich raced to the other end to set up its offense. The Spartans caused a turnover, to regain possession, but White was able to cause a turnover, scoop up the ground ball and score with 22 seconds remaining to force the extra frame.

In the overtime period, Norwich's Justin Pearson (Theresa, NY) nearly scored the game winner from the ground, but David DeGhetto (Clifton, NJ) made the save from point blank range to help set up MacDerment's heroics.

DeGhetto finished with 12 saves, as did his counterpart from Norwich, Nathan Proctor (Pleasanton, CA). Castleton and MacDerment held a distinct advantage in the face-off circle, winning 16-of-22 to bolster the Spartan possession. MacDerment also had a game-high 10 ground balls, while Rick chipped in with eight.

Proctor led the Cadets with six ground balls and three caused turnovers, coming out of his crease on numerous occasions to aid the defense.

Castleton will travel to Mount Ida College Saturday for a rematch of the last six North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championships. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Norwich will begin its Pilgrim League schedule Saturday with a trip to Springfield College at 1:00 p.m.
