Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Jacob Ferry (Warwick, R.I.) scored two goals and Josh Costa (Sutton, Mass added one goal and two assists as Castleton State College defeated Maine Maritime Academy 4-1 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's soccer action Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Spartans improve to 10-5 overall and 6-0 in conference play, while Maine Maritime falls to 4-7-2, 0-4-1. Castleton sits atop the conference standings, and are assured the top-seed in the upcoming conference tournament with just one game remaining against Husson University tomorrow at 2 pm.
Costa put the Spartans on the board in the 25th minute of play, heading home a Nick Johnas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) offering. Johnas played a long service into the box, and Costa redirected it past the dive of Mariner keeper Randy Bartlett (Lincoln, N.H.). Ferry made it 2-0 just three minutes later, blasting home a shot from 20 yards out.
Johnas pushed the lead to 3-0, 13 minutes after the interval, heading home a Costa corner kick.
Maine Maritime got on the scoreboard in the 64th minute when Nate Tipton (West Chester, Pa.) scored on a direct kick from 24 yards out. Ferry got that tally back five minutes later, potting his second goal of the game off a Costa through-pass.
Bartlett made 11 saves in the loss, with the Spartans holding a 21-6 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
