Box Score Castleton, VT – The Castleton State College defense made Sean Fitzgerald's (Saratoga, NY) first half goal stand up as the Spartans defeated visiting Southern Vermont College 1-0 in non-conference action at the Spartan Stadium.
In what was the first evening contest at the new artificial turf facility, Castleton did not disappoint the crowd of 450, applying pressure early and often to the visiting Mountaineers. Southern Vermont was able to keep the Spartans at bay, as Aaron Eschler (Gloversville, NY) turned away four shots in the first half (eight total). Eschler, the reigning New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Goalie of the Year was unable to get to Fitzgerald's marker 19:27 into the contest, however, and it proved to be the difference. Chris Mulholland ( Ridgefield Park, NJ) sent a bending cross into the waiting Fitzgerald who sent it past the sprawling keeper.
Castleton's defense kept goalie, Mike Anthony ( Dartmouth, MA) clean for much of the game as Southern Vermont was able to get off just six shots in the loss. Anthony stopped all four that were on goal in earning the shutout.
Greg Klopfer ( Voorheesville, NY) nearly gave the Spartans some insurance during the 73 rd minute of play off a direct kick. The senior midfielder sent a rocket in from 28-yards out and past Eschler, but went ringing off the nearside post.
Southern Vermont will play its home opener on Saturday, September 5 as part of the Southern Vermont Tournament. The Mountaineers square off with Regis College at 12 noon. Castleton is on the road Thursday, September 3 when the Spartans travel to Colby-Sawyer for a 4:00 pm non-conference match-up.
