Box Score Fitchburg, MA - Marie VanDerKar, Elizabeth Haggerty and Stephanie Pearce combined for 13 goals, and Castleton won its third-straight game, defeating Fitchburg State 20-7 in New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance action on Tuesday evening.
Fitchburg State's Kaitlyn Kelley opened the scoring 2:38 into the contest off a an Amanda Burns assist. After the two teams traded goals, giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead with 23:38 remaining, Castleton reeled off an 8-1 run over the next 12 minutes. Pearce and Haggerty keyed the run, scoring five of their seven combined goals during the surge. Emily Swan and Burns sandwiched Pearce's third and final goal to make it 11-5, before VanDerKar capped the first-half scoring off a Nicoel Adams assist to give the Spartans a 12-5 advantage going into halftime.
VanDerKar scored the first two goals of the second half, as part of a 5-0 run over the opening 3:48. Castleton cruised the rest of the way to the 20-7 win.
VanDerKar ended the contest with a game-high six goals, and Haggerty added four. Adams added two goals and three assists as Castleton improves to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in NEWLA play. DeeDee Schroeder, Angelica Mazzola, Aimee Goulette, Stephanie Paproski and Kristen Rochler rounded out the Spartan scoring.
Burns led Fitchburg State (1-5, 0-2 NEWLA) with three goals and one assist.
Jen Astrella made 11 saves in the loss before giving way to Jill Shaner who stopped one shot over the final 15 minutes of action.
Francesca Mazzola stopped three shots in the first half to earn the win, while Rebecca Duszak stopped two in the second half.
Castleton returns to action on Thursda when the Spartans travel to the University of Southern Maine for a 4:00 pm non-conference match up.
