Castleton stumbles at Cazenovia

Syracuse, NY - The Castleton State College men's lacrosse team fell to 1-3 on the young season, dropping a 12-8 decision to Cazenovia College in non-conference action at Nottingham High School.

Cazenovia broke through first, as Kyle Boland scored just 2:42 into the first period on a Gareth Fabian assist. Castleton's Craig MacDerment scored the equalizer just over one minute later, unassisted. The Wildcats answered with three straight goals, two by TJ Shaw and one by Fabian to take a 4-1 lead. Kevin McCarthy got one back for the Spartans as Cazenovia took a 4-2 lead after one period. The second period saw Cazenovia score the first three goals to take a 7-2 lead, before Castleton rallied for three of its own to make it 7-5 at halftime.

Cazenovia scored three unanswered in the third period, and although Castleton came back with three in the fourth, the Wildcats were able to hang on for the 12-8 win.

Fabian led the Wildcats with two goals and four assists, while Shaw added a game-high four goals. Boland scored two goals and had two assists, while Jevon Pakkala and Pat Sauers each had a pair of markers.

McCarthy led the Spartans with three goals and two assists, while Phil Barry added two goals. Michael Martinez, and Ryan Bartlett joined MacDerment with one goal each.

Michael Mamunes stopped 12 shots in the loss, while three Cazenovia net minders contributed 15 saves for the 3-3 Wildcats.

Castleton is back in action Saturday afternoon when the Spartans play host to Mount Ida College at 1:00 pm.
